1621 – A Good Year

When the pilgrims arrived in 1620, they had a pretty rough go of it. In fact they lost some 40+ of their colony in the first year. 1621 was a good year for the colonists.
In 1621, things were better and they decided to have a celebration, in honor of their good fortune and the Native Americans who had helped them survive.
Though Thanksgiving celebrations were considerably scarce in the following years, it was in 1777 that all the colonies had a Thanksgiving celebration – a one time thing.
But it was not until President Abraham Lincoln that the holiday really became ‘established’.
While some may feel we don’t have much to feel thankful for, myself included sometimes, just having another new day to try and make a difference in our sphere of influence is a bright spot in an otherwise gloomy outlook.
Yesterday I went to Natural Bridges, a California State Park in Santa Cruz, with my daughter, grandson and a little friend of his. It was a wet, cold stormy day – but I like days like that. Anyway, just watching those two kids having fun at the waters edge, trying to outrun the waves, chasing the birds and playing with the seaweed was a joy. Kids know what joy really is. For this day I am Thankful.
I am Thankful for anyone in the world who knows the right thing to do within their sphere and does so. I am Thankful for being an April Fool Baby, born in a country so full of opportunities despite the doom and gloom. I am Thankful For You!
